Growing A Garden As A Family Project
In yesteryears families did a lot more things together. They were not sidetracked and splintered, going every which way as they are so many times today. There is still probably no better way to bring a family together in harmony than to do a project together. Growing a vegetable garden together as a family unit is one such project. In growing a vegetable garden together a family will receive many benefits. Far too many children today are disadvantaged by not having an opportunity to participate in the processes that allows plants to grow. Too often they are far away from their food source, and they only have a textbook knowledge, if that, of the miracles that produce a carrot, a leaf of lettuce, an ear of corn, a potato, a bright red tomato, or an apple. If children had the opportunity to witness day by day the events that culminate in that sweet carrot they love so much, they will, undoubtedly, develop a greater appreciation for it and all the other foods they love to chomp on. They may not be so excited about spinach and squash as they are about carrots; however, if they have a chance to eat fresh spinach, squash, and tomatoes that have been allowed to fully ripen right in the garden, they may develop a new taste for these wonderous miracles of nature. Gardening together is a project that presents an infinite number of ways for a family to provide learning and educational experiences that will teach children not only about eating healthy foods, they will receive on hands training about the importance and effects of weather, different types of soil, the importance of insects, worms and other natural critters, etc. Any project that a family does together will help them learn new ways of cooperating and being patient with one another. A family gardening project is no exception. Cooperating and working together peacefully will be a necessity right from the getgo as they plan for the garden such as the location, the types of plants that will be grown, the design and arrangement of the garden, the tools that will be used, how the responsibilities will be delegated, etc. There are so many things that a family can teach the children when growing a garden together, as well as having insights and eve openers that the adults will learn from too. Gardening is always full of surprises because it connects you to our living Mother Earth with its complex and fascinating environmental and spiritual components. A family vegetable gardening project can also lead to other family projects such as cooking or learning the art of food preservation together. |
